President’s Corner

Dear Fellow Roadrunners,

Another successful camp out is over thanks to the leadership of our Wagon Masters, Robin and George Minder, and the willingness of all those who attended to chip in whenever necessary. There were many challenges, all of which were met with flexibility and with an air of camaraderie. Check the write up for more details.

Before moving on I need to Thank Will and Jean Bass and Gene and Penny Rider for coming forth to volunteer as next years Wagon Masters for Quartzsite. While sitting around the campfire one night we all agreed that the campout at Quartzsite MUST continue if nothing else does. It is by far the most attended of our gatherings. Also discussed was the reality of designating 2 different parts of the country to hold gatherings. One in the Fall and the other in the Spring. Nothing was decided, but one thing is certain we have to do things differently in the future because what we did in the past isn’t working. Ideas and suggestions are welcomed.

Your retiring executive has made the decision to host the Pre-National Rally to be held at the Rincon Country West RV Resort. The dates are April 9th to April 14th. Again, we will be at the same resort as the National and hopefully we will not have to move sites. Presently we have 15 couples signed up to attend. Should be another GREAT event. Check out article and the registration forms on our web site.

The South Loafers are our hosts this year for the National with Christine and Thomas Upton the Rally Masters. They have chosen a spectacular RV Resort in the Rincon Country West RV Resort.

If you are planning to attend and have just forgotten to register please do ASAP. Give the Uptons a call when you send your registration off so they will have an accurate number of attendees. We don’t want them cancelling anything. Check out details of the resort at their Web Site. Registration forms and more information are available on our web site.

I alluded earlier to the fact that this is your executives last year of office. Our By-laws limit the term to 3 years. If the Roadrunners are to continue as a social club, we will need a new slate of officers to stand for office at the Pre-Rally in Tucson. If you are interested in 1) standing for office (the present officers would be happy to explain what that “job” entails) or 2) act on the nominating committee, please contact me at either msheilaheath@aol.com or 713-252-9376.

In November the Alfa Sun Risers informed the Oversight Committee that unless SOB’s are allowed at National they will NOT host the 2011 “National”. The Roadrunners are next in line to host Nationals and have been approached to host the 2011 “Nationals”. I feel this is quite a task and would involve the participation of all active Roadrunners to pull it off.

A few things to consider:

  • It is becoming more difficult to entice vendors to offer seminars to our dwindling numbers.
  • There are very few full-service RV Resorts that are willing or able to accommodate a large group.
  • Fewer owners are attending. Whether because of; the present economical situation, unwillingness to travel any distance, no longer interested, cost, length of rally etc. this is a fact.
  • Lack of necessary volunteers to plan/organize such an event.
  • For example: no one from the Roadrunners came forward to host a fall campout/gathering this year. How could we put together a “National”?

I need your ideas and comments!

On a point of safety…

FYI: Many of us are aware of the recall on the Norcold Refrigerator. I understand there is also one on the Dometic refrigerator. Along with other suppliers, Charlie’s Service is installing a fire extinguisher in the refrigerator to prevent the fire from burning down the R.V. Charlie and Vicki lost not only their coach but also the fire took their new home. Their unit wasn’t even on the recall list.

That’s all for now.

Safe Travels always!!

Sincerely
Sheila

Rally and Camp Out Reports

Quartzsite Campout

Hello All Roadrunners,

This year’s Roadrunner Rally in Quartzsite was a huge success in spite of the weather!! We had to work a little harder to get in all the activities that were scheduled,,, but like all good Roadrunners we did our very best to reach our goal of socializing to the MAX!

At any given time we had up to 30 rigs!! Some stayed all week (in spite of the rain), some only stayed a couple of days. All in all a good time was had by all! We ended up with so much Hobo Stew we had it a few nights. The Breakfast in a bag was as usual a big hit! Who knew putting food in a plastic bag and cooking it in boiling water could be so much fun! We couldn’t have had such a successful Pancake Breakfast without the help of all the Bacon cookers and of course our cooks Clayton Jones and Bud Serpa. (Thanks for all your help.)

Of course the biggest hit of all is always the donuts every morning! A big thanks goes to Fred Bascher and John & Diane Tschumper for picking them up for us!

Our sheriff, Marianne Muzio, did a fine job (get it fine) fining us all! There was so much food at the Sheriff’s POTLUCK,,,,, we could have stayed a few more days! Wait,,,, some people did! They probably had better weather!

So many people helped out in so many ways, I just want each of you to know, that George and I appreciated everyone’s willingness to pitch in and help!!!

I always find it a little sad when a rally is over! People start putting things away, saying goodbye to friends they might not see until next year and driving off in many different directions! Then I remember, this is our life we’re Roadrunners!
Till we meet again!

Robin & George
